A Dog, a Pub & a Famous Drink - St. Thomas

The chilly mornings and freezing nights have returned for me here in Colorado, and it made me think of warmer places. A place where the sun’s hot rays feel like they’re healing you. What holiday destination comes to your mind? For me, a hidden gem, on a Caribbean island that I hope will always stay hidden.

The beautiful island of St. Thomas in the Caribbean was a frequent stop that I made during my career working for Royal Caribbean. I’m sure many people here at Wind Crest have visited themselves! There’s a beach, which has one small bar, the occasional live musician, and great drinks. The trees overhead offer shade, and a light breeze keeps me at the perfect temperature. The warm sand hugs my feet as I walk toward the rolling waves. Stepping into clear water I would see small fish swimming between my ankles, and in my right hand, would be a Bushwacker—a cocktail invented at the Sapphire pub in Sapphire Village in St. Thomas! In 1975, bartender Angie and restaurant manager Tom created the cocktail, and it was named after a visiting guest’s dog! The owners of the Afghan hound, Bushwack, were flight attendants and rarely travelled without their dog. So the legend of the Bushwacker travelled throughout the Virgin Islands, and 40 years later when I frequented the shores of St. Thomas., I was grateful that for a small chunk of time, my ‘usual’ was a Bushwacker. So where is this beach I am talking about?

Unfortunately it is secret among crew members, so I won’t be spilling the beans here! But I will give a hint and say that you need a boat to get there...
