Otters Making a Splash - Singapore

In the County of Bedfordshire, United Kingdom, lies my hometown Luton. Twenty-eight years later I now call Denver, Colorado my home. I moved permanently to the United States in November 2019, but before that, through hard work and opportunity, I was able to travel to many places, experience different cultures, and eat lots of tasty food. I want to begin with Singapore, where I spent the 2019 New Year.

Based in South East Asia, this incredible metropolis has exhibited what the future of all cities across the globe could look like. Singapore is a dense city, but is also filled with bounteous wildlife. I’m sure many of you have seen or heard of the famous Supertrees in the Gardens by the Bay. These trees may be man-made, but they are alive with over 700 different species of plants, they generate solar power, collect rainwater, and literally absorb heat. Sustainability is the main attraction of the gardens, but something I found just as interesting are the otters that occupy the vicinity. Yes, there are wild otters living in the Gardens and the surrounding shoreline. Smooth-coated otters, which are native to the area, had almost gone locally extinct 40 years ago. However, environmental and cleanup projects have allowed the otters to return! What’s more, the otters and the people of Singapore now live side by side. The otters even have zebra crossings on some

streets, and they are adapting to city life.
